When winds blow against the gable end they push it towards the interior of the house and push up on the roof overhanging the gable end.

If the roof eave extends beyond the gable end wall by more than 1 then a dropped gable is normally used to support the roof sheathing.
First the most common type of failure is loss of roof sheathing from the gable end that results in the gable wall loosing its bracing along the top edge.
In some cases the expected loads will be too high for the gable end frame end wall studs or ceiling diaphragm.
Some of these standard details may be sealed upon request.
Stagger top and bottom cord bracing so the lumber ends on different trusses for additional rigidity as you work your way down the building.
This is done by plumbing the truss and securing as described above for the first gable end.
To assist the building designer in determining the bracing requirements to transfer lateral loads from the gable end frame into the roof and or ceiling diaphragm many truss designers provide standard design tables and details based on typical design assumptions used by building designers figure 12.
